It's World Press Freedom Day. There is no democracy without a free press. The First Amendment is first for a reason. Today, let's be thankful for our Maine-owned media and celebrate local journalists and newspapers and all the good work that they do.
It's Patriot's Day, commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Menotomy, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. Celebrated mostly in Maine and Massachusetts (thanks to our shared history), it is also the traditional start of school vacation week.
After a tumultuous year in American politics, Democracy Maine releases the second edition of their report, State of Maine Democracy, that assesses the health of the state’s government and democracy. The first edition was released in April 2020, just after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
